Portable versions of the softwares are recommended as you can always carry them with in your flash drive and use them in any of the labs and on any computer. This is the reason why I mention only portable software below.
HTML editors
The HTML editor you need to use is Kompozer which is an enhanced version of NVu.
Make sure you have a portable version installed on your USB so that you can use it in any labs.
Download Kompozer Portable
Text editors
- Notepad:present on all Windows machines. No need to install but very basic. No HTML code highlighting.
- PSPad (portable CAB version). HTML highlighting, integrates HTML Tidy.
- Programmer's Notepad (Portable Version). HTML highlighting, closes HTML tags automatically.
CSS Editors
- CasCade : The above mentioned Kompozer has a CSS Editor Cascade inside it
- SimpleCSS: is a standalone CSS editor which does require any installation
Note about FrontPage
This course does not use FrontPage as we want you to know how to use HTML, CSS and JavaScript from the ground up rather than just knowing how to use FrontPage and have no idea about the HTML it generates. It is for the same reason that we will also not use Kompozer much. FrontPage has been end-of-lifed by Microsoft is now replaced by more capable Visual Web Developer which also adheres to the CSS standards. See also Expression Web is also a better Web Design and Development tool from Microsoft which adheres to the standards such CSS, etc
From previous experience in SFDV1000 Introduction to Dynamic Web Development it was found that students who have used only FrontPage/Nvu had very little knowledge about HTML and CSS.
